Marang, Terengganu my new home

Marang, Terengganu my new home

Plane landed 45 minutes after take-off from Kuala Lumpur. I am now in the state of Terengganu, a beautiful place it is. It sits right on the edge of the South China Sea. The state of Terengganu is one of the most conservative states in Malaysia. The city that I am placed in is Marang and I teach at SMK Rusila.

During our orientation week in Kuala Terengganu, we attended meetings every day, visited two schools, attended a Gamelan show, and planned and hosted an English camp. We were introduced to the police chief of KT (Kuala Terengganu), the JPN (head person in charge), mentor teachers, and several other important educational figures in Terengganu.

At the end of orientation, my mentor Sharifah drove me 20 minutes to my new home in Marang, Terengganu. It was the day that I had been waiting on for quite some time. My home is literally a 5-minute walk from the beach and a 45-minute boat ride to Kapas Island. Our home is situated between the education administrative building for Marand and two of Terengganu’s elite school. Also, it takes me about 10-minutes to get to work every day.

As we pulled up to the house I was quite surprised, the house looked much better than what I expected. We have a huge sliding gate that must be locked always. The front opens in to a nice sized den that is equipped with two sofas’ and a small coffee table. The kitchen is quite big and has a kitchen table, microwave, toaster oven, and a unique looking stove. The house has 4 bedrooms, 4 twin sized beds, and two queen size beds. The house also has two bathrooms, one with a squatty potty and the other has a western toilet (standard American toilet). My housemate decided that she would take the smaller bedroom and I took the master bedroom with the American toilets. The deal is that she can use the American toilet at any time, lol.

I promise the trash is all plastic bags from the grocery store no actual trash.. lol

Our home is in the heart of Marang, Downtown is a 5-minute walk from the house. In that area, there is a small grocery store, a KFC, Pizza hut, and a local market. There are several grocery stores within a 10-minute drive from the house. Also, there is a grocery store in KT, 20-minutes away, that has everything that we need (reminds me of Walmart). Across the street sits my favorite fast food restaurant, McDonalds’s.
