Week one & Scavenger Hunt
Our first week began with orientation. We were formally introduced to the Fulbright coordinators and staff. We learned more about MACEE and the Fulbright program. They of course went over all the logistics and what is expected of us as well as other opportunities and resources that are available to us.
There are 98 Fulbright ETAs that will be spread throughout seven states in Malaysia; Terengganu, Sabah, Sarawak, Kedah, Kelantan, Pehang, Perlis, Perak and Borneo. Everyone was excited to find out placement. On last Thursday, we found out our placements, I will be placed in Marang, Terrengganu. Terengganu is the most conservative state in Malaysia. There will be 15 ETA’s throughout Terengganu. I so excited to learn more about my community and meet my students.
On Saturday, we participated in a scavenger hunt to get us familiar with KL.. Each ETA was assigned to a team, I was assigned to team green (hijau). All teams met at the Petronas Tower Park. Once arrive at the park, each team was given a set of directions and a map. No team was able to use a cell phone for directions and we 5 hours to complete the hunt.
Our first stop was the pool at the park near the Petronas towers. The Second stop was at the KLCC. The Third stop was to see the Malaysia flag at Merdeka Square. Our fourth stop was to a Hindu Temple, Sri Maha Mariamman Temple. We stopped at a local market to eat lunch. Our fifth stop was to one of the many malls in KL, Sungei Wang Plaza. Our final stop in the hunt was the Malaysian American Commission on Education Exchange Office.
This activity allowed me as well as my team members to bond. I really enjoyed this activity, even though it was hot, we were able to explore and learn more about KL. Getting thrown out of a teksi (taxi cab) because the driver wanted to over charge us. Holding my nose to kill the stench of raw beef and fish as we walked through the market to find lunch. Walking through the heat and capturing beautiful photos of landmarks was all worth it.
